home video avi, - 1 gigabyte, need to convert.

i made a home video
it's 1 giga-byte, it's .avi - dvsd video codec..
and i want to convert it to something small, like 50-60 megs, keeping the audio quality as high as possible but i will give up on some of the video quality.
what should i use?
will divx be good and how can i convert to divx?
sorry if i post in the wrong forum but there are lots of converting/ripping forums here so i just picked up this one.
