Hi,
I'm new to the DVD world. I have found a million links to a million tutorials, but no one takes the time to explain what these files are. I find it easier to work with things I have an understanding of. Maybe if the admin reads this, he or she can incorporate them into a closed forum post.
1. What is a VOB file. What does VOB stand for?
2. What is an IFO file and what does IFO stand for?
SUGGESTION: maybe you could start a glossary for DVD terms. My apologies if you already have one.
Thanks
Panhead

panhead49,

Your right about the million links, that's because DVDs can be very complicated. They can also be very simple, if you ask a simple question. Like you have.

VOB stands for Video OBject. These files are the ones that contain all the video AND audio parts of the disc. These elements are called "streams". So a VOB is a collection of streams.

IFO stands for InFOrmation file. These files are needed to tell you DVD player how to "run" the movie, using things like subtitles, foreign languages and so on.

Thats why it cna be very complicated.

Often when people rip their DVDs they take out (strip) a lot of these unwanted streams. In doing this, it often makes the overall size of the files small enough to fit onto a DVD-R disc (that's the type that you and me can burn to)

Hope that helps.
