VCR/DVD Recorders & Hard Drive - Digital Cable?

I'm looking to buy a VCR/DVD recorder combo, and noticed that some models - the more expensive ones - come with hard drives and tuners. The worst thing about digital cable, which I have, is the inability to record to a standard VCR. Would one of these contraptions with the hard drive and tuner enable me to do that? My ignorance on this stuff is vast, so I would appreciate guidance, including suggested models. Thanks!
