I am new to the DVD ripping world and have read a lot of useful info. My question is simple. When copying a DVD to a DVD-R, will the sound be in Dolby Digital 5.1 like on the original DVD movie. If so, do I need any special software to do this.

I don´t have a DVD-R(you lucky bastard) but I think that if you do a direct copy of the disc the sound will be in the same format that it is on the original DVD.

Actually I bought a Sony Vaio RX580 with the dvd burner. Do I need to get a regular dvd rom also to do this, or does the dvd ripper put it on my hard drive so I can use just the one drive
I hate titles

moondog: You don't need a separate DVD-ROM, ripper copies the VOBs and other stuff to your HDD and you just burn that (VIDEO_TS directory) to your DVD-R. You should use search in these forums, "we have all the answers already" for DVD-R burning :-)

Yeh, if you rip the DVD and use IFOEdit to remove all that is not wanted and to correct the VTS sectors, and save the IFo, then Create a folder called VIDEO_TS and put ALL the vob, ifo and bup friles into thi folder and burn with Nero, you will have a DVD-R the same audio and Video as the original or very, very close to it.

Hate to jump on on this message, but you bring up rhe point that I'm at. I use IfoEdit. Is there a way in the program to see which is english etc? How do you determine the correct sector?

amerifax..

Yeh, it is so easy once you have dne it a few times,
1, rip to hard drive use whatever you want, as long as it rips it.

2, Open up IFOEDit ad press open at the bottom left hand corner, select the XXXXX.IFO file in the folder you have ripped your movie to, You will have at least two one will be a video_ts.ifo, leave that one and use the other VTS_01_0.ifo or something like that.
If you look half way down the screen, you will see somthing like "uses vob id's 1,2 3 and so on, remember these, press vob extras and up comes a window, select a dir to save the new files to and unselect re-mux, but make sure strip iud's is selected as well as create new ifo. OK that window, select the sound track, usually the first one in English AC3, ok that window, and then it will come up with another to select vob id's, tick only the boxes from the other page, press stripi and it will recrate new VOB files. Once fininshed open the NEW ifo files, both of them and press GET VTS Sectors and save the new files as themselves, this makes sure that all the correct info is at the right part, like an index, once you have done this on both the IFO files, you need to burn it.
I use NERO and select UDF/ISO DVD, under the left hand pane where it says new, right click and create a folder called VIDEO_TS in this folder, put all the files from your new DIR into it, so i will look like this.

NEW
VIDEO_TS
+ vts_0_0.ifo

and all the other files.
Press burn and wait.

You are best to try it on a DVD-RW to test first, you can get thee from a Computer Fair for about £6.00

Ay probs email me

Here is waht I have.
UnCheck (Re-Mux)
Check (Strip Streams)
Check (Strip Vobid's)
Check (Vob Unit)
Check (Correct IFO Tables)
Check ( Create New Vidio...)

Second Window (Dialog)
Check (0 Audio 1 English)
Check (0 SubPicture) Not sure what this is?

Nexzt: I select StripIt

The next Dialpg Window I have 2 selections
1 Vobid 1
2 Vobid 2

I selected both since I figured they relate to the "uses VOBB-IDS:1,2" This is what you said to remember. Was I right?

This dialog box had the "correct IFO Tables " checked so I left it checked.

What am I actually doing, reducing the size of the movie?

Thanks for taking the time to give me a direction to go.
