I fried my first PS2 while soldering. It worked for 2 weeks then started acting up, tried to fix and pretty much melted a copper pad.
So...yea..i got another one and haven't had the courage to start on it until recently. I'm using messiah2 chip (22 points) and i did all except points q,t,u,v,r and h,i. The bios ones i can get done, just didnt have time to start but the 2 points h and i on the cd/dvd controller on the back are getting extremely annoying. I'm no expert in soldering but i figured out from tutorials and hands on experiencing that u have to scratch these points lightly to reveal some copper to make the solder stick. All the other points on the back was soldered fine but these 2 pests wont stick. Looking through a magnifying glass copper can clearly be seen and i have no idea whats happening here. Is there some basic thing i'm forgetting here, or is there some trick to this? Could simply taping the wire make it work? I dont want to do that, cause it simply wont stick there forever and i dont even know if thats possible. So what can i do?? HELP

okay i've also been advised by other members to use flux, never knew what it was. Heard that name before a lot of times, but since i've no prior electirical training i had no clue. So yea i hope this works for me, i will update this thread if i am successful with the modding. thanks.

i'm tryin to mod my ps2 with neo 12 but i think i have to solder 5 points on the back and i cant figure out how to get the metal thing off it has 4 little things that arent screws and i'm not sure what to do
PS2 v10 w/ flip top & swap magic 3.3
O/S: XP home 2002 SP2/Genuine Intel T2400 @ 1.83GHz/1GB RAM/120GB HD

if your asking about removing the metal heat shield that covers the entire underside of the board were the via points are then if you have removed all the screws then it should just come off if you gently pull at it

sorry its actually the top of the ps2 the metal cover it looks like theres 4 rivits and then on the other side of the board it shows where it was connected and solderd in place

I had to gently (and by gently I mean...don't put enough pressure to break your motherboard in half, but be firm! =) pry the heat shield off my motherboard last night where there was the most resistance...just make sure you have *all* the screws out. I worked around the sides of the heat shield till it came apart...didn't have to do this in my V4, but my V9 was on there pretty good...unsure if they used some sort of adhesive on the heat pad over the emotion engine or what.

ok i got if off and installed the chip but its not working because its not loading any burnt games just the origionals. the prob is i cant get 5 of the wires to stick on the top side of the board, theres really nothing to stick them too just little indents on on a smooth glossy surface and i was told in that case the flux would do me no good should i try anyway?. its a neo 12 chip if anyone has done it sucesfully let me know how to make it stick!! i think i may just go with the swap magic disks and slide trick, do i have to have a GS for this? i really would like to keep the neo 12 chip though it sounds a lot better than swap disks

You need an exacto knife and preferably some sort of lighted magnifying glass (I have a $25.00 desk lamp with a magnifying glass from Fry's). Or just look real closely at what you're doing. You need to scratch off some of the solder mask around the copper pads. The solder mask is what makes the circuit board look green (or any other color)...it protects the copper traces on the circuit board. Use the exacto knife to scrape off some of this and to nick up the copper pad...just be sure not to cut the trace or lift the pad off the motherboard. Then you'll need to apply some flux to the copper pads. Put some solder on the tip of your iron and run it over the pads and a little bit of solder should start sticking to the pads. Once you get some solder on them, they should be fairly easy to stick your tinned wire to.
Yeah...I really thought I was boned when I started these points, but I managed to get them.

okay, I, the original thread opener, said earlier that i would post back here after finishing the mod. Well i've finished the mod (sortof), well it doesnt work. Exact problem is no video. I remember from past browsing of forums that it is a soldering issue, but i cant remember which point exactly. So where should i look at? Does anybody know?
