OK, here's the ultra-n00b question of the week:
What are the pros/cons of using a SM disk (of course with the necessary sensor mods done) and a mod chip (keep in mind the extra mods that need to be done to avoid laser damage for some of the chips with the slim PS2). I'm looking for performance advantages/issues, compatibility with different media types, potential damage caused to either the PSTwo or the discs, etc.
I'm guessing opinions might be biased in this forum so I've posted in both HW boot and SW boot forums.
Thanks a bunch

Well i would have to definetly recommend swap magic, i havent had a problem yet i usually use a company called ridata they have really good media. Im sure there are advantages of a mod chip over swap magic such as not having to swap disks before playing every time.

as far as i know, dvd-r is the best format to use for backups, i've heard a lot of people having problems with any other formats.

wut i did is that i have SM and HdAdvance so if they don't work on hd then i use SM to play. I think this is the best way without modding your ps2 to prevent laser waring

Hi all,
I have read somewhere that action replay 2 can be used instaed of swap magic. Does this work with PSTwo (V12).? Did any one try using this or Action Replay Max instead of Swap magic ?

I just got a PStwo (slim) and I decided to mod my first console ever. I am familiar with the PS2 mod chip termanology (as far as I know), but I dont know which type of mod to gt with my PStwo. You guys are talking about the swap magic, but I dont know how that works on a PStwo, since its already top loading. Also I dont know what 'sensors' you guys are referring to. And as for a chip, I have never soldered anything before, and yoyu guys said you had to use a special laser or spmething. NE help would B good help. Thanx

What ps2 are you talking about? the slim version? if so i didnt know those had top loading. But if they do it works out even better for you because then you dont have to buy a flip top case all you have to buy is swap magic www.swapnslide.com is a good place to purchase swapmagic.

No, u cant do that becuz the PS2 slim has sensors on it, and when you open the square piece the sensors arent pushed in (kinda like the light on a refridgerator (SP). The swap magic ones are circular so the sensors are always pushed down but Im worried if it will ruin my console.

That swap tool looks dangerous.
I rather just use straws, toliet paper, and maybe a house hold cleaning solution.

Does anybody know someone who can put a mod chip into a PS2 and works around the London area. I know of somebody who can do it for £90+£8 travel fees but I think this is too dear as I hear some mod chips cost as little as £7 to purchase.

Maybe this will help your decision.
Sony sometimes fixes broken PS2s waiving the "fee" given there is no modification to the unit. This does not include voiding the warranty sticker. IT DOES INCLUDE MOD CHIPS. I use SM and had voided my warranty, but they fixed it np because i had it all back together like it was brand new (except the warrant sticker) So you may save yourself $100+ in PS2 repairs by choosing SM. Oh yeah and SM is almost as easy as Modchip, with a flip top its only one quick step, no fuss no muss.

So, if I were to get Swap Magic 3.3 disks (I'm kinda worried about the quality of the disks, and from whom I should buy it from for good shipping (fast); I've heard a lot of people's 3.3 disks weren't working), should I use the tape method (I don't wanna spend any extra money), or should I go with the flip top lid? I don't wanna void my warranty...I didn't mention any of that magic switch/ghost switch shyt, because I feel as though they may crap up my PStwo, plus, I dunno much about 'em, especially the ghost switch (I mean: What the hell do they mean by doing just one simple "switch" you can play all your backups?).
Thank You
