Cloneing a ps2 HDD for Socom II

Here's the question fella's. I have a third party HDD all i want to be able to do on this HDD is have it work with the PS2 so i can download the NEW SOCOM II MAPS onto it and be able to play. I'm not gunna pay 130$ for some stupid FF game plus the HDD, if all im using it is for the maps. I have herd that i have to format it with a program call WinHIIP, now i installed it and it has a PS2 format button that claims it will format it exactly like the PS2's HDD is. So before i start doin this. Is all i should do is format that like the PS2 then try to load the utlilty disc. Or is it impossible becasue what i have been hearing about the DNA$. Can you guys please help if you have any information.

-I have the oringinal Socom II disc
-Orinigal Maps discs
- A ultility disc for the HDD

I dont want to clone the game to the drive just the maps so i can play them online.
