Is there anyway to burn a DVD with a regular CD-RW writer? I've burned VCD's SVCD's XVCD's AVCD's TVCD's but not a DVD. I need HELP!

I've heard that other people have burned DVD's with a CD-RW drive... I just need to figure out how to do it! I think there might be a program which allows you to do it. If anyone finds a program or software that allows you to do it, PLEASE reply to me!

Put a dvd into your cd-rw drive and tell me what happens. I can predict your result. Nothing! Thats because the drive doesn't understand the disk. Only a dvd drive would! And if your cd writer can't read a dvd disk then it sure as hell can't read (or write to) dvd blank media. And you can't write a dvd onto a cd-r because you would need gigs of space on the cd wheras the highest we can get is a 99 min cd (that is with normal hardware of coarse, you can get a 1.4gig cd with special hardware).

Well I have been here for a long enough time to be able to tell you that all you are going to get out of it is a dvd2vcd guide or divx guide or whatever. Perhaps you could give the full url of this phenominon.

The expert guide to copying dvd's is a thorough look at dvd to (S)VCD, divx, etc... It has nothing about being able to write to dvd blank media with a cd rw drive!

Well, either you have created a vcd/svcd or you put a dvd encoded file with a very low birate and it burnt it to the cd-r. Now this isn't a dvd, whats happening here is that you dvd player doesnt seem to even check anything just plays any files it sinds so it would read the ifo and display that you are playing a dvd.
However, to get a movie to fit on a cd-r at 90 mins would require like 1000kbits/sec and 96kbits/sec audio. That quality sucks. Even vcd is better!.

Hey Dela,
I have a DVD player with a file classifying system. It told me that a DVD was on the Cd. It could only hold 20min though. Very high bitrate. 45fps. Smooth running. Much better than VCD

45fps. Jaysus. I thought the only frame rates used on dvds were 25fps 23.98fps and 23.98fps. It tells you that its a dvd because the files its reading have been encoded for dvd! The disk wouldnt be classed as dvd.

Hey I have a burner called DVD Plus! It burns in DVD format not only is the file DVD enocded but has a menu too! Neat prog. You can get 45fps with a prog called speed on need.

I don't see the point of 45fps. That would just take too long and wouldnt really make much difference.

What about 'mini-DVD?' Isn't that an option? About 15 or 20 minute's-worth of bonafide dvd-video can fit on a standard cd (I think), and it plays back on standard dvd players. (Doom9 has some articles about it, but I am totally confused by them).

Ye but when we are talkin about full length dvd's, you dont want to change the cds about 5 6 times now do you???? I find that writing mini dvd often produces poor quality in my stand-alone so I stay clear of it!

(Maybe for Music Videos?)
To be honest, I don't know how a standalone recognizes cd-media as a DVD in the first place, <aka 'mini-disc'> and in the second place, I sure as hell wish my player could recognize my dvd media with vcd files on it. I'd really like to create a BIG vcd disc on dvd. (My vcds are perfect as far as vcds go, perfect a/v sync, fluidly-smooth motion; I've honed the making of them down to within a kitten's whisker), - now I need to find some burning software that doesn't tell me the format and media don't match,(Prassi Primo) and then sucker (fool/co-erce) my standalone into thinking it's playing a big fat vcd.
VCD is good enough for playback of television shows (sourced from dvds) through regular (normal) non-widescreen, non-Hi-Def television sets. Nine hours'-worth of vcd-like video on a single disc sounds pretty good to me.
Oh-oh..... I've starting to drift away now....

Ye I like that idea too!!! I've gotten pretty good at vcd myself but I'm still stuck with TMPGEnc Plus because CCE SP seems to make shit out of my encodings! (For SVCD though, nothin beats CCE SP!!!)
I too don't understand how a dvd player would recognise cd media as dvd! Sounds pretty dumb to me. When I use the check disk function on my stand-alone it can tell me point blank that this is a cd-r. Oh I dunno! Strange and weird world of DVD!!!

Dela, let's you & I make a promise: If either one of us figures out how to make a *huge* VCD disc out of a standard recordable DVD, we *must* immediately help the other !!!!
DVDs require vobs, bups and ifos. VCDs require at least two folders, <MPEGAV> and <VCD>. The mpegav folder contains the actual mpeg1 files in .dat form (AVESEQ01.DAT, AVSEQ02.DAT, etc.).
The <VCD> folder usually (always?) contains two files, ENTRIES.VCD and INFO.VCD, both of which are 2,048 bytes long. That's It!!!!
A perfectly playable VCD !!! NOW, if we could just do three simple little things.......
(a) Find some burning program that would put these two stinky little folders onto a dvd without getting cranky and giving us an error message ('Filetype And Media Don't Match').
(b) Let us cram up to 99 individual mpeg1 files onto it.
(c) Find some damned dvd player to recognize the dvd AS a VCD.
Then we're home free. (It ain't gonna happen though). Why? Because ....
NTSC VCD resolution is a legal dvd playback standard (352x240), *but* the .mp2 sampling rate of 44.1kHZ is not. (I've made a few vcd video files directly with 48.kHZ sampling instead, but it still won't work), although they play back fine on my computer.
Also, when you/I/Me/We load any given disc into a dvd player, it first checks to see what *kind* of disc it is - cd or dvd - then sets itself up to play *only* the accepted file formats for that type of disk.
We need to find some burning software that will allow vcd burning to a dvd, and then some standalone player that doesn't get it's knickers all in a twist when we put the resulting dvd into the player requesting vcd playback.
<pant pant> Maybe someone could come up with some flashware fix (firmware patch) or something, I dunno.
A 4.38 gig video cd would hold a S--tLoad of movie material. I estimate over 9 hour's worth.

Now if I could only get my player to do the reverse! (I'll make CVDs instead of vcds, no problem - but I want to put 'em on a dvd with it's seven-times capacity of a cd).
Right now in my area, +RWs are fanatically expensive, but if I could get 8 or 9 hours of vcd (or) cvd material on 'em, (perhaps tv shows), that _would_ justify the cost.
Imagine getting all three Lord Of The Rings movies (or, say) the three movies from the GodFather boxed set on a single dvd! NO disc swapping!
In a technical sense, it can't be very hard to do. They (manufacturers) could allow it if they wanted to.

Actually, I put a DVD in my DVD reader and my burned DVD in my reader and they both almost had identical files.
