Playback problems-length of MPG

It has happened several times already that even though most video files that i download are displayed perfectly, a few give me more difficulty. A large movie file, over 100 MB, will be displayed in every media player as having a length of 3 minutes, as opposed to 30 min or whatever its actual length is. When i play the video the first 5 seconds get played, then it jumps 5 minutes and plays 5 seconds, and so on and so forth until the end of the video.

Can anybody help me with this?
