I have noticed for me some of the newer games only work with DVD+R disks (Killzone, Outlaw Golf 2, Burnout 3).

I've only ever used Maxell DVD-R's on my V3 PS2 with a Matrix Infinity and I've yet to have a bad burn (I've done about 25 backups so far)
I got 50 of these puppies on sale over the summer and can highly recommend them!
Also, while I haven't tried the other two, I successfully backed up Burnout 3 onto a Maxell DVD-R and it played great!

To my knowledge the type of media (+ or -) has nothing to do with the game itself and everything to do with YOUR console. Some PS2's read + some only read -, etc. I've never tried + on mine as I only own DVD-R's but every game has worked fine including San Andreas (though load times were even WORSE than the retail game so now I play it off my HD) and like I said before Burnout 3 works great.
I'd suggest picking up the -R's and play away!

i know this is a old thread but i got the 50 pack but my problem is that they only burn at 4x, 6x and 8x on my lite-on 1633S. On the discs it even says 1x - 8x.. but it wont burn under 4x.. has anyone burned under 4x on these discs? or is it my burner

The SOHW-1633S has a 4x minimum burn speed, you could deliberatly alter the position of the lase in the drive causing it to work at a slower speed, but usually drives like this will have their optimum burning quality at that specific speed. I.e. a slower burn will result in worse off quality. So even if you buy 1-8x disks the 1633S will only burn at 4x - which if all applications are closed down - and suitable media is used, can do a very good burn.
As for Maxell DVD-Rs, its not so much the case as whether this type of DVD-R will work, but more to the fact of are they compatible with your DVD-RW causing it to have a good burn when burning them. Different burners prefer different media.
