I'm not sure what you mean by "bad", Kenneth. If you're wanting to know who manufacturerd your DVD media then you can use DVD Identifier. Just pop your blank DVD media in and it should tell you who really made it.

if you're meaning "bad" as in after you've burned it and it's not working at all, I'm not sure then.

The code won't necessarily tell you who really made the media. Most Verbatim media ships with the "MCC" code, yet is made by CMC, Moser Baer or some other OEM partner. At best it gives a rough indication of who made the technology (dye, stampers, etc) used in the production of the media.

One way to tell the quality of a given disc is to do some tests on it after it has been burned. The simplest way is to use cdspeed (www.cdspeed2000.com - freeware), which also has the benefit of working on all drives. What you're looking for is a smooth rising curve, as any drop will mean that the drive had to slow down in order to read that section.

Some burners - Lite-On, Plextor, Benq and others - also gives you the option of doing more advanced tests. What program you should use for this depends on who made your burner, so I won't go into more detail here.
