could anyone please tell me If I am going to harm my PSX V.12 after installing teh DMS4 lite chip?
I've read that the laser fails in a couple of hours.
Is this true?
Should I get any extra chips installed to protect the laser?
tnx

The only thing that i suggest u using to play your backups are swap magic using the straw method. I strongly advice against installing any chip only because the laser burns out REALLY fast. I suggest returning your psTWO for the bigger ps2 models only because they are less likely to burn out. Otherwise use swap magic 3.3 with the straw method.

I think they have a diode fix,and another fix for the pstwo system for pstwo mod installs.I agree though with bboy_flex the pstwo systems are poorly made, and probably aren't made to last long.I think using a modchip in a pstwo system will wear it out,but this is just an opinion doesn't really mean anything.

the lasers in the pstwos have issues and burn out with or with out a mod , they just seem to burn faster when there is a mod installed because you are playing backups and it is harder on the laser .

but how about backup DVDs? would that make the laser die faster too?

do you mean movies ? if so yes , they are no different than playing a backup game . that is what i used to test a few pstwos with before modding them and they died .

are those that died PAL or NTSC versions? I also heard that the ones bought in early November are more likely to burn out and the ones bought in late November or early December dont have the Laser burning out problem.. BTW, is the PSTWO that you bought is in a yellow box or a white box?

My PSX2 came in the yellow box.
White or yellow are better?
So what you are saying is that I shouldn't worry about the laser problem, in any case I am not playing that much.
What brand DVD-R should I get and also is it possible to use DVD-RW or DVD+RW for testing the backups?
thank you for providing some answer to this issue, i could not find anything related in the net.

the 1s i have seen are ntsc in a white box , i hear that the newer v12s have beefed up resistors comming off the laser driver but this is only a half fix . dvdrw is never recomended and i always use ritek dvd-r or memorex .

why is the DVD+-RW never recomended? could you explain a little bit.
Also I found out about the V12 Laser Fix PCB you sold this on the board as well and it fixes the problem for life. I think I am going to go with this solution.

Does the swap magic 3.3 do the trick without the cover. I heard about the straw puting around the laser somewhere and you dont have to open the psx2.
Is this true? Can I just order a set of disks and nothing else?
Whould it work for all backups?

imo the swap magic tools is not the most practical way of going about booting backups on your psx.
I installed a dms4 lite & the diode fix for my brother and he hasnt had any problems with his v12 unit. (has had his ps2 v12 for sometime now and plays lots of games). I installed a matrix infinity modchip in my own v7 ps2.
chip installation is not that hard to do, just take your time and dont rush. think of it as a work of art.

i did the same dms4 light and laser fix, no problems so far.
Please remember that you need to flash toxic bios first time you start ps2 after installation of modchip.
till todays i can play rewriteables as well.
glad with the update.

I have a white box slim ps2. I want to put mod-chip in there. However, I have no idea which chip should I get. Are you guys suggest me to get the DMS4lite and the DIODE fix? And what is flash toxic bios you talkin about? If you have any link (for diagram and where to buy) can you send it to my e-mail pls guys.
My e-mail address is osafunelousy@yahoo.com.

Well either get a dms4/w dioide fix or get a ripper III chip if you have a slim unit. The matrix chips seem to be tough on the slim ps2 units, maybe they will update there firmware to improve on the CD/DVD bus patching protocols; so slim users can experience the matrix infinity, but with the patching now it will cause problems and lockups with the slim ps2.

the toxic team did not design the DMS3 or DMS4 chips they are a third party publisher of flash updates for the chips, don?t think I can post a link to them but the newest version is v1.1 Toxic Bios.

So the ripper3 doesn't require a diode fix?

No it doesn?t, the ripper 3 is designed with the v12 in mind. The ripper 3's FPGA waits for an internal signal (I think this has something to do with there VHDL code they talk about) ; its buffers are kept in reset until good power conditions are achieved (this all happens very quickly).
So instead of the diode where it limits voltage swing on the coils. The ripper does something similar but different. It actually has a value in mind before it completes the power on process and the architecture is designed so you shouldn?t need a diode fix. The ripper team has done some heavy research on the v12 failures, there webpage has some fixes that are pretty deep and different (these are major fixes that doesnt fix but changes the board so the problem is not regulated but repaired), one includes adding an actual voltage regulator onboard (not a voltage limitor)
http://ripper3.com/V12_protect_rev1.pdf
Thats not to say it couldnt hurt to add a diode fix if you have a ripper 3 chip. The ripper 3 chip doesnt have some of the better features/support of the matrix infinity or dms4, but it does an excellent job of handling the poorly designed pstwo v12 without the need of a diode fix.

The chip sounds pretty good. I myself have a matrix infinity on a v9 and its the best chip i have ever used. Too bad that it doesnt work out so well for the v12.
