Windows 2000
Intel p3
1.0 GHz
384 ram
40 gig hard drive
DVD shrink and descriptor
Normal cdr and benq dvd r
Firstly, thanks for all the great advise here, now to my problem.
When copying a DVD movie it writes the movie to my hard drive (no problem) then I insert a dvd-r and start righting the movie, it starts off stating aprox time left 2hrs + this slowly comes down then anywhere between 60 and 90 % the times changes to unknown and the % meter stops (the pc does not freeze up) but it just stops righting.
What am I doing wrong or what is wrong with the pc ( is the processor to small ??)

Do you have a DVD Burner? If so make and model.
You cannot burn a DVD in a CD-RW burner.
You cannot burn a DVD with a DVD-ROM.
What programs are you using for ripping/encoding/compressing?
Some details may help.

yes, 1 x normal CD-RW (not used for copying dvd) and then 1 x Benq 1610 DVD-RW,
It rights the DVD to the hard drive, no problem, It is when it copies it to Disc, I am able to copy PS 2 games etc all with no problem; only DVD movies that gives me the problem

Processor not a major problem (as always more is better) but I get by with 264Mb RAM.
Sounds like your burner - 1 x Benq 1610 DVD-RW could be rather ancient and maybe on its last legs.
What program are you using for burning? - Decrypter/Nero etc. and what mode ISO/VOB?
Do you have plenty of free space on your hardrive - and has it be defragged recently?

Have tried Nero 6 and decryptor failed on both and using iso mode, One one of the other treads here there is a step by step guide, (I re-instaled decryptor and used the default settings) then went step by step (only thing I did diff was by saving the file to my hard drive due to no dvd rom, The DVD-R is brand new, The is about 20gig free on the hard drive and have not run a defrag recently (could this be why?)

A defrag would not hurt although it is unlikely to be your major problem.
Did not check your burner specs but when you said 1x, thought it may have been an older burner. Most newer burners are 4x or 8x or more.
Next suspect is your media - what brands have you tried for burning?
Do you have DMA enabled?
Have you successfully burned any DVD's?

Unsure if DMA is enabled, Will check up tonight at home. Max speed is 12X but have tried 4x with no luck, unsure what media (will also check) and No I have not burned any DVD (have tried about 8 and all stoped between 66 and 90%) I have managed to copy PS2 games without a problem also copied a couple of other data discs also without a propblem, It is almost as if the burner just stops burning, no error's, the timer just changes to time remaining (unknown) and that is where everything stops.

I'm also having the same problem - TDK DVD-RW works just fine but TDK-R just ends up hanging. Any suggestions?

Have you changed the firmware at all ?
I have a NEC2500a and updated the firmware to DL - got nothing but coasters till i changed back.
I use TDK+R - no problems so far.

Go to the source of the firmware upgrade - and look for the origional firmware - or go to the vendor site of your dvd and see if they have an official firmware upgrade.
