I just got a v12 slim ps2 for my b-day and also a nice sony dvd burner. I've been reading up on making backups of games in these forums but I am getting mixed mesages and methods for back-ups. I know everyone used what works for them...etc. Is there and special to know about the newer v12 ps2. I know they make modchips for it DM3-4. My basic question is to play back-ups on this version of the ps2 is it wiser to go with a mod chip or something else? I am a electronic engineer so installing the chip is no problem at all, I am just looking for ease of use and reliability.

ease of use wise a mod chip would be your best option. DMS4, matrix infinity and magic V 5kx are compatible with v12.

I've heard lots of bad things about lasers burning out of the slimline ps2 because of installing mod chips.
I myself used the tape method to tape down the switches inside the system and then just use the swap magic discs. This works for most games. Also they have released a replacement top for the system so you can just lift it up and switch discs with the swapmagic discs without any modding except switching the tops.
I would go with the swapmagic methods I talked about caus they are usually cheap and you won't risk the laser burn out problems people have been having with the mod chips.

You can get the replacement top for the pstwo from a link off the site www.ps2ownz.com I would stay away from ps2covers.com I have had a very bad experience with them and have heard many other horror stories from others.
There is something new also call i think a ghost switch for the new slimeline ps2. You might wanna check that out as well. Seems like it might be the easiest way.
Last if you go to ps2ownz.com you will find a link on the left to the pstwo section. This will show you what switches I am talking about taping down. On the site they might say to glue the switches down, but I have just used tape and it has worked fins for me. As long as you don't leave the top open the hole time you play then you should have no problem with the tape coming off. Also with tape the mod is easily removable.
They will also talk about installing a switch. I didn't do this, tha only down side of skipping it is some back-ups require a double swap using dvd or cd loader and you won't bea ble to use use them without the saughtered in switch since the system always thinks its shut with just the tape mod.
If you have any other questions I will try to help I know it can be hard to find info when you are new to the stuff :-)

I am going to let everyone know that modchip or no modchip the laser can burn out. I was using Ritek media DVD-R G04. It supposed to be pretty good dvds, also all my movie and game backups don't have a stratch on them. When I was loading a game, I smelled burning coming from the pstwo and sure enough did read a thing after that. I only had my PSTWO for 24 days and it fries. I only use swapmagic thats it, I haven't even open the pstwo at all. I wrote Sony an angry letter, hope you all do the same. I will get it fixed for free and it better not burn out again like it did. I recommend not buying a slim pstwo cause sounds like tons of people are burning them left and right. Sony, you need to get your act together! Has anyone sent a pstwo back to Sony with a burnt laser and how long did it last when you got it back? hehe This blows.
