powerdvd malfunctioning after re-installing xp

why was my dvd playback with powerdvd4 jerky (video) and choppy (audio) after re-installing xp? there was no problem before.

my pc setup: pioneer dvd-rom115/ati radeon8500/sb live-24 bit/celeron 1.2/512 ram/

both the ati and sb drivers are the most updated. the only thing was i'd recently installed directx 9.0c. could it be the cause of the problem? but dxdiag found everything in order. many thanks if anyone can help me solve this problem.
