Hi, I have purchased a PS2 70002 for my children for Xmas. I had a friend pick up some PS2 games whilst in Thailand. Only problem is they do not work!
The DVD games are in NTSC U/C, PAL & NTSC formats.

Do I need to get a modchip for these to work?
Or can I get away with Swap Magic?
Or is it something simple?
How do I rectify my problem before Xmas!

Location: Newcastle NSW AUSTRALIA
Thanks

swap magic have formats that can play PAL and NTSC, however your PS2, if you have bought it in Australia it may need swap magic if you have different formats for the games. Howev4er for swap magic to work you would have to modify your PS2 a little

- like a flip top or a slide card (google it)

So try Swap Magic out- if you have the latter parts.

A life unexamined is not worth living- some wiseguy said it!

The PS2 that I have purchased has already has a flip top lid for the DVD to sit in, is this what you are suggesting? Do I still need to modify?

After reading your explanation PAL formats should suit Australia but I cannot get them to work either! This indicates that these are not originals but copies, is that correct?

I have been looking all over the net and it seems that Swap Magic only works with DVD-R backup formats is this correct?

Can you backup using DVD+R formats?

It depends, swervy69. If your PS2 reads DVD+R disks, then it will work. Try burning movies on a DVD+R and play it on your PS2. Most PS2s cant play or read DVD+Rs, but mine can. I had the same problem before, but thanks to some people here, i got the answer.

Even though it has a flip-top,
there is mod (PS2LID) still needed for the New PSTWO's.

www.ps2lid.com

Or you can mod it yourself.....

In order to modify your new PSTwo console you will need:
# 15-watt Soldering Iron or similar (Radio Shack #64-2051B)
# 60/40 standard Rosin-Core Solder .032 diameter or similar
# Flux-Pen (aids in re-work, although not completely necessary)
# 1/4" Split-Point drill bit to make the hole for the toggle switch
# SPST Micromini Toggle Switch (Radio Shack #275-624)
# 30AWG Kynar or similar single-strand wire (2pcs x approx 6in ea)
# Small piece of electrical (preferred) or duct tape or equivalent
# Micro Mini Screwdriver set (Phillips and Flat/Slotted Heads)
# Hairdryer is optional, used to aid in bonding the tape better

With the above supplies and your PSTwo console, you can begin
work! We often are asked why wiring a Switch is necessary, and
the answer to that is because in order to use the CD/DVD Loaders
with your Swap Magic Discs for the 'problem' titles you need to be
able to perform both detected and undetected swaps... so simply
taping both of the tray sensors will NOT work alone unfortunately. ;)

There is also something called "Ghost Switch".
Quote:
A custom-molded plastic plug for the PSTwo rear lid sensor, and also a plastic switch clip for the front lid sensor... allowing users to play ALL of their LEGAL back-ups and Import games using the Swap Magic Discs with the simple flick of a switch!
Installation should take under 1 minute as follows: Simply unscrew the top of your PSTwo, snap on the cap and click the switch into place, clip the peg off of the PSTwo lid underside, and replace the top cover- that's it!
