I've always used both with max smoothness being my preference for the compensation.

bigorange explains the differences in the settings in this thread.....

I use the high error compensation one and leave it at sharp but do not do deep analysis. It takes a lot longer but it is a much better backup. I can't even tell the difference. I haven't tried smooth though.
