HELP! Can burn dvds but cds are not recognized

Help,
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I was burning fine yesterday. Now, today I am not! I have nero v6. and use that to burn my cds. When i put a regular (non burned) cd into the drive it says there's nothing there. When i go to burn a cd it says please insert blank media (something like that). I was burning before, so i know it's not the type of disks. However, i go to my drive and it says it's functioning fine (under device manager). I also have dvd-x copy platinum and as soon as i put in a dvd-r (even withouth dvd-x open) the sony dw-d22a says blank media what do you want to do (the auto run screen).

so my question is why does it do it for my dvd's but not my cds? what did i do!?
