EDIT: It's now DMS4 Pro vs. Matrix Infinity vs. Ghost 2
I'm going to buy one, but am still unable to decide which one to get. I've heard good things about all of them and I especially like the DMS's ability to boot homebrew crap, something which the others do not advertise.
If someone could suggest one over the others I would appreciate it. (I have an NTSC so I cannot use the O2)
Upon further reading, do all chips support HD booting in all versions of the PS2? I have a version 3 or something, one of the early ones with 10 screws

That's what I was saying...they all seem to do more or less the same thing, I was just wondering if people think one is better than any of the others
EDIT: Ok...I now see the ghost is different, but the matrix and dms still seem very similar

I believe there aren't any major differences between DMS4 Pro and Matrix Infinity. However, DMS4 Pro has 2MiB of flash memory compared to Infinity's 512KiB - that's four times as much. Yet, it might be arguable whether this extra memory has any use or not.

I've been doing some reading and people seem to like the matrix better because the DMS team's support sucks.

I've heard that the Crystal Chip is now a contender as well. I'm in the same boat as Viper as to not knowing which to get. I'm definately getting one, just don't know which. I do like the onboard memory of the DMS, but the Crystal Chip now also supports homebrew apps from CD/DVD, memory card, and I would assume HDD as well. It also allows use of bigger unofficial memory devices, and they have a really sexy Xbox looking dashboard for it too.

Well I already ordered my matrix, I guess if this one turns out to be so much better I can get it and take out the matrix. If only you would have posted about the crystal chip 2 days earlier :P

The Crystal CHip is pretty neat, has some features on it that most people will probably never use. Good choice with the Matrix, best chip out right now IMHO.

don;t buy either its fucking bullshit to have to solder this shit on... I am fucking frustrated as hell even if you can get one fucking wire on the other 17 will come undun. and even if you coat the solder and preheat it it will never fucking stick.

Well I modded an xbox and had no problems, i do know that a ps2 is a lot harder than an xbox though. maybe you just suck at soldering? lol

I just read somewhere about not not posting nasty things like that somewhere... I've got one word for you... FLUX. But hey, just because you don't want to shell out the extra cash to have a professional do it, doesn't mean that solder-in modchips aren't the way to go. There are alot of people out there who have gotten modchips, installed them themselves, and have had no problems whatsoever. Personally, I'm doing mine myself as I'm IPC and PACE multilayer board certfied, and have been working on electronics for 10+ years. I also have access to the proper soldering equipment to do SMD board modifications like these (microscopes, METCAL irons, NoClean solders / fluxes, ESD certified workstations). For the average person though, this kind of thing is quite difficult, and one can very easily cause permanent damage both to the PS2 and the modchip. If you're really having that much trouble, I'd check out http://www.norcalmods.com . I've heard nothing but good things about them, and from the pics on their site, they do primo work.

What's all this deal about flux i hear? I didn't use it for the xbox mod, i just tinned the iron myself and it all worked fine, i didnt have any trouble either.

Solder almost always has a flux core, so if you're quick about it, you can get decent flow without using any extra flux. The proper way to add a whitewire (what modification wiring is called in the industry) is to remove the solder from the pad/joint/whatever you're going to solder to with solder wick (the copper braid stuff), clean very well with alcohol, and resolder the joint with the wire in place. By adding flux to the joint before you solder, you'll get much better solder flow, and a bit more working time. If the solder isn't "sticking", remove whatever solder IS there, clean very well with alcohol, add flux, and try again. Don't just keep heating it thinking it's going to flow if you get it hot enough. You're just going to burn the board which can lead to lifted pads, or worse, a short. Then you're pretty much screwed unless you have the tooling to cut it out and repair the traces. Remember to use a flux that is compatible with the kind of solder that you are using, and when you're done, clean everything that you soldered really well with alcohol or over time (years) the residual flux can eat away at the board. So I got my Crystal Chip, and installed it today. When I first turned it on, it wouldn't recognize anything, then I realised that the chip had no firmware in it, so I burned the CD with the firmware and bootmanager on it, loaded it up, and it worked fine. I still can't play backups because crystal chips themselves don't support imports or backups so you have to get hacked firmware, and the only place I know to get it is down for server upgrades right now. :(( Other than that, I loaded Reality Media Player and it works great. It's amazing to be able to sit and watch a DivX AVI from my PS2. Not to mention MP3's and Jpeg's. I'm happy. :)
