Last month Newegg had a deal Ritek DVD+R RIDATA DRD+474-RDCB100 100PK. They turned out to only be R03 discs, not RICOHJN. Still @ 36 cents/disc it is ok.

I did not have a chance to use them till now. So I just found out they are 8x disc. The disc is marked 4x, DVD Identifer and DVD Decrytper both show 8x.

Normally I burn at 4x, but I had to try these out. Yes they burned at 8X. The movie turned out fine.

Strange!

Hey rroettger, here's another wierd media issue. I got the sony + 1x-8x, I usually burn max on my verb movie quality,4x, then i slapped in a sony without checking the settings,whoops-it burned it at 16x with no problems.Played great on my stand alones. Now my verb +8x will go 12x if I don't recheck my settings. This does not happen on any other media I use,and on my other burner.just those 2. Strange!

Media may be getting better?

It's probably officially certified for 4X but unofficially will burn at 8X just like the Ridata 4X coded RICOHJPN.

Type : DVD+R
Certified Write Speed: 2.4 X - 4.0 X
Drive Write Speed : 2.4 X - 4.0 X - 6.0 X - 8.0 X
Manufacturer ID : RICOHJPN
Media ID : R01
Product Revision : 02

Even though I can write at 8X, I don't value the extra few minutes as much as a perfect burn (although I've burned at 8X without getting coasters). The Ritek Ridata 8X DVD+R are also Ritek R03 and max burn speed is 8X so it would be better to just buy the 4X and save the $5.
