Am a regular user of DVD Shirnk on personal puter. Santa brought son New Sony Dvd +-R Writer. Replace old CD Writer with Sony Dvd Writer.
Problem....Puter only recognises burner as CD burner NOT DVD burner.
Have DVD Shirnk, Nero & Record Now on puter, none of the 3 sees a DVD Burner.
HOWEVER...in device manager it says "Sony Dvd Writer"
device working properly.
When I put in CD-R it asks what I want to do.
When I put in Blank DVD + or - R it comes up like an audio disc with media player.
...Sister has NEW puter with factory DVD writer doing EXACTLY same as my son's. Sees it as CD NOT DVD writer in burning programs. Device manager sees DVD writer.
HELP please

Uninstalling the drive through Device Manager may do the trick. Try this:

Go to Device Manager >

Expand the tree for DVD/CD ROM Drives >

Find the drive in question, right click it and go to Properties >

Under the Driver tab, select Uninstall then OK.

Now reboot and Windows should detect and reinstall the drive.

If this doesn't help try the same steps as above except expand the tree for IDE ATA/ATA Controllers and uninstall either the Primary or Secondary controller depending on which one the drive in question is attatched to. Nero Info Tool can tell you which chain the drive is on under the Configuration tab.

Let us know if this helps :)

Have a similar problem new puter It has an NEC ND3500 DVD RW (only DVD or CD in the PC) Anyway it will play CD's and DVD's fine and it will record on CDR's but when i try and record DVD's the system thinks it's a CD. When you place a blank DVD in the drive it changes the icon in My computer from DVD+RW to CD Drive. I checked Nero infotools and it seems to have it right saying it is a DVD+RW. It is connected to the secondary IDE Channel. I have deleted the driver for both the Drive and the channel as suggested above but no luck:(

Any suggestions gratefully received. Cheers.

Does it do this just when using Nero or does this happen with other burning apps as well?

Hi....Thanks for getting back to me. When for example I Drag and drop files in windows I want to burn to DVD. It changes the icon to CDRW when i put the disk in then when i drag and drop it starts to work then says 'Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want windows to do. Retry /Cancel'.

All files are like this nothing to do with write protection.

By dragging and dropping within Windows do you mean you're using Windows' built in burning utility? If so that may be the problem because Windows IMAPI can't burn DVDs and that may be causing the problem.
