Editing MPEG-2 Home Movies

I have a bunch of DVDs with old home movies on them. I want to give pieces of them to family members, so I need to edit them. I read that I should avoid decoding them from MPEG and then re-encoding them, since that will cause loss of quality, so I just want to edit the MPEG-2 files--only trimming, nothing fancy. Can someone recommend a guide to how to do this? I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 6 but would be willing to purchase an inexpensive program if Roxio cannot do this (which it does not seem to be able to). Thanks a lot.
