Hi,

I have a modded PS2 with a DMS3 chip. It's been modded for awhile and has always worked flawlesly. It sat ontop of my bigscreen unused most of the time. Recently I started playing it again and noticed some of my original games would not load. I tried a few backups and also had trouble with one of them. A few just gave errors and made clicking noises.. Some of the originals will load and make it through the loading screens of the game and then puke out. Then it starts making loud clicking noises from the DVD drive..And last but not least..Most of them play perfect.. I am assuming the DVD drive could possibly be going out? I have't tried cleaning it yet.. What do you guys think?

Matt

have your chip encountered any problems in the past. does it boot up the new games now? most likely, your lens are giving up. get that lens replacement done and you should be fine.

the laser replacements go for around 30 bucks on ebay. and you're right if you get lucky on getting it cleaned out. i cleaned my cuz's out and it worked fine. take the cover off and use compressed air to blow out the dust in the lens. that's what i did and it worked. if not, try other cleaning devices, if not, you're outta luck and you have to get the new lens.

To make things simpler then the link, the adjustments are located right underneath the laser block itself, even on the ps1 it was on the side of the laser unit where the ribbon (not the power plug) starts. All voltage adjustments on DVD/CD and lasers are almost always located on or near the laser itself.

But in the ps2 case it is right under the laser! Use a tiny flat head screwdriver to turn the adjustment knobs, just a very small turn to the right is all you need.

Basically all it does is increase the strength of your laser beam (therefore it can read data much better). To read cd-r and dvd-r's you need a stronger beam (if you don?t want fmv or skipping in the video and stuff - this will make it run as smooth as an original)!

you could also try adjusting the laser angle, there is a white wheel behind the cd/dvd tray turning this a few click will lower or heighten the laser (therefore adjusting the angle the laser hits the cd/dvd)

the rods on either end of the laser probably need to be lubricated too, that is probably where the clicking is coming from. That or it is trying to find the data and cant or it can?t properly read the data due to poor laser beam.

Also after you take off the top and you see the cover over the cd/dvd drive bay (it has 4 small screws on it); well before you take off the bay top cut a small square off of a small thin refrigerator magnet and put it on top of the silver/grey circle in the middle (it will attach to the ps2 magnet already there). What that does is strengthen the magnet so the disc doesn?t slip out of place. Over time the magnet that holds the cd/dvd in place will weaken this will fix the problem and it?s real simple.

Even if it doesn?t have a weak magnet it?s still something you should do since its real simple and it will always keep the disk firmly in place and centered. Plus it?s a good preemptive measure to take (especially if you use labels).
