MPEG Files dont join properly!!!

Right sorry last question,

When I try to join 2 mpeg files they join ok and look ok but when I play them I get all sorts of weird things happening.

Film plays up to join then stops,
Film plays up to join then fast forwards,
Film only recognises first part,

Then even stranger

Film plays all way through ok but when converted to DVD format MPG for burning only plays first half?

Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I have tried all sorts of joining software with no joy. I have even tried to convert them both to AVI first then join them then convert but still the same??
