DVD-R Backups don't work on Toshiba

I made backups of two different movies (one viz dvdclone and the other via shrink/nero) onto 4x TDK DVD-R. They both play in my Philips and Audiologic DVD players (and my PC), but do not play in either of my two different Toshiba brand DVD standalones. What is going on here? How can an audiologic player recognize a DVD that Toshiba cannot?!

Could it be that Toshiba doesn't like DVD-R?
