Black and white Playback ? Region problems maybe? Help please

hi im very new to dvd burning although am very familiar with cd burning, ive just started trying to back up and write DVD's, Im using a Sony dvd player to play the dvds which plays dvd+r/rw and dvd-r/rw the software im using is dvd shrink and nero for the burning, the problem ive had is that on my first attempt of backing up and writing an image file onto a TDK DVD+RW i had no problems, it copied it and played it back onto my dvd player fine, im currently trying to back up a film wich ive borrowed from a friend this is just for a trial and error precess so i can learn all the different methods and problems, when i play my friends copy in the dvd player it plays black and white but on my pc it plays it crystal clear in colour, so i thought id try and use nero to copy it onto a tdk dvd+rw, it copied it but this copy still plays black and white, so then i tried again using shrink and it still plays black and white on my dvd player, in efefct what im looking for is any method to make a copy and back it and also ensure that it can play colour on my dvd player, so im wondering if there is such a method or could it be that my friends copy is just a different region or something as simple as that as im assuming that beacuse it plays it colour on my pc then there must be a way of getting it to play colour on my dvd player ( his copy doesnt look an original disk) all help will be much appreciated and i will post all results and any other news that i may come across regarding black and white playback
