I've backed up about 6 DVD'd now and each one loads perfectly with menus and everything but when i get about an hour into film it starts skipping and freezes causing my dvd player to crash ive tried it on several dvd players that support dvd-r and no luck, I also cant scene select past the crash, so im pretty sure the data just isnt getting onto the disk.
I've used clone dvd, dvd decryptor by itself and dvd decryptor with dvd to one and nero like suggested in the guides section
P4 2.66
512 ram
and SONY DRU 700A DVD RE WRITER
I have latest firmware and am using DVD-R 1-4X as supported by my writer, so i can't see what the problem is my only guess is that my disks are shit they are EMTECH they're not on any compatability charts so i dont know whether they are good or bad, somebody pleas help, I'm fairly new to burning.

Sounds like those emtech's are crap.If you can't watch those backups play "perfect" on the drive that produced those backups,it can be poor media or the programs you are using.
Poor media, slow burnspeed. You might have to go to 1x on the really crappy media, but the stand alones will still have problems.
You can try some tdk or maxell rw's to make sure the pc will burn and play it. The stand alones are pickier when playing the rw's.
Once your pc can play those rw backups:
Get a small pack of maxell -r 4x.
If the maxell's don't help, try DVD Shrink "free" and set it up to enable burn with your Nero. That is my way of burning and no issues when I use high quality mcc and ricohjpn media.

thanks trying DVD Shrink now, have just noticed that DVD2One didnt copy the movie properly as i tried playing it straight from the folder, instead of compressing it has just been chopping off the end of the movie, so dvdshrink sounds hopefull all though i have used it before and it didnt work to well, however i have read the guide so all should be ok. If not then it has to be the media, i'll let you know.

open up DVD Shrink, edit preferences, set target size to custom-4300 mbs,ok.When you get to reauthor, try main movie only,AC3 ch 5.1 english, untick every thing else. Let is auto compress, backup, double check settings, don't use the enhancement, but tick the run in low priority mode, hit ok then let her do its job. No multi tasking.
The main movie only may take some strain off your processor.

is that likely then that If i'm multi tasking the copy will crash and thats why it wont play the whole movie, i'v ejust noticed that when i put the copied dvd in my other dvd drive (read only) it won't auto load infact itsa pain to even play, is this the disc. I'll try it agin and tell you what happens p.s. does the buffer rate always wanna be high.

It is advised that during any of the dvd ripping, encoding and burning process, that you don't multi-task. It is advised to shut off your internet, screen savers, and anything that may start up while you are in any of these processes. That processor is running max at 100%. That is why the processor may increase the temperature of you tower/case, and something may start up like a antivirus update or screen saver and shut it down.
Your buffer rate should be high, this is like a shock obsorber for your drive.Don't be alarmed by it.
When you put that copied dvd "backup" into your stand alone players, they probably won't play it. Your pc drive that burned it should play it and it should be a great video with little to no flaws. If your pc can't play it, those stand alones won't be able to play it,most of the time. Other things can happed it that is senario. This is the main reason you need HIGH QUALITY media. The stand alones have a harder time reading poor media backups.
Good Luck
Try like I said in last post, main movie only,no enhancements. This will put less strain on your processor and hopefully it works.

hey thanx for all the help I've finally got it right I think it was just about getting the right balance I dropped the write speed down to 2x as the media can handle 4x max then I did like you said and reduced the output size to 4300 however i did put on all the features as I will want them on some backups but most importantly I just let it do its thing(no multi tasking) anyway pleased to say that it runs perfectly shame i've already wasted about 10 disks on other things(mind you they are shit disks, thanks for your help much appreciated. P.S. not sure if this is the right place to post this but do you have any advice on concverting .AVI to dvd i tried tmpg but it wound'nt regon the AVI file

I can't say that I totally agree with those who say not to multi-task during burning. It really depends on your system. I've burned DVD's while uploading and downloading torrents and playing counter-strike online while the burn was going on. I do have an AMD 2600 with 1536mb of ddram too. I recieved no warnings, glitches or over heating. So, it really depends on your system. I'm glad you got the problem worked out though.
