I've got a single IDE controller in my Dell (which is my primary controller). I've got my DVD reader set as Device 0 (Master) and my DVD burner set as Device 1 (Slave).

Whatever drive is set on Device 0, runs in Ultra DMA mode and works great. Whatever drive is plugged into Device 1, will only have a transfer rate set in PIO Mode and won't allow me to change it. This makes the devide run very slow.

Points:
I do not have a secondary IDE port.
I have tried to uninstall the IDE driver and have WINXP do the re-install.

My questions - How can I get the transfer rate to change to ULTRA DMA Mode for Device 1.
