I just got a new computer with a burner in it. I'd like to copy a couple movies,but don't have the slightest idea how.
Anybody wanna help a complete newby?
Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it!

If you have a DVD Burner, then i suggest you read through the Guides and FAQ's
As for software, the wise man would download DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter to get you started.

If you use dvd decrypter, and the movie is bigger than 4.38 gb, then you need to compress the files with something like, dvd shrink, or nero recode...check out these interactive guides for dvd shrink:http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php

Like I said I have absolutely NO experience in this field.If someone has a tried and proven method and would like to walk me thru,great.

Whats wrong with the guides that have been recommended thats how i learnt.
You cant just join a forum and expect people to hold your hand all the way you do have to do some reading up on the subject first.
Im not having a go but the whole reason Guides and FAQ's are done is so that you can learn and the same questions do not get asked over and over again.

I've learned as a machinist that there's no such thing as a stupid question.A lotta guy's don't like to ask for help but their the one's that spend a couple hour's standing there trying to figure out the simple things.
Nothing wrong about asking the quickest,and most efficient way of doing thing's.

If you check the guides on the link I posted,they pretty much do hold your hand...all you have to do, is sit back, and watch, and click next once in a while.
If this isnt good enough for you,then try the search function, which is what most of the people in here wouldve already told you to do.
Maven is right...you need to do things on your own once in awhile.

If I pick up a movie at Walmart,how do I find out what format it is?
Same if I borrow one of a buddy of mine?

Do you mean like DVD 5, DVD 9 etc ?
If this is what you mean just stick the disc in your DVD-Rom and have a look at the size.
If below 5GB then it will be a DVD 5 and if above most likely a DVD 9.
That is just the simple answer :)

dvd decrypter will tell you how big it is in an instant...put the disc in the drive and open decrypter.

I've been looking at the site posted,and it's starting to make sense.
If I look at a movie in the box,and it say's it'll take an hour and a half to watch it,is there any way to figure out the size of it?

No you cant,but theres no need to sweat the size of the movie before you buy it, because you can reauthor, or replace titles with still images or do movie only.dvd shrink will add the compression it needs to fit the size of your dvdr's

the time it takes to watch a movie can't really help with figuring the size of a movie. especially with older movies, it's no real indication. you're best off just popping the dvd in your computer and checking it that way.

This length of the movie does not mean anything as it will depend on audio formats used what video bitrate the video is etc etc.
The only way to find out the size of the movie file is to load the disc into DVD Shrink and then have a look at the filesize of the movie only.
