What types of equipment do I need?

As a newbie, I don't know where to start. I want to copy movies off Comcast cable, edit out the commercials, and then play these movies on my DVD player. I don't have a DVD recorder nor does my computer have a DVD burner. I'm told that a simple DVD recorder (~$140) can't erase the commercials so I'll need a recorder with a hard drive (~$275). Is this correct?

Would there be any advantage to buying the simple DVD recorder and then installing a DVD burner on my PC to edit the recorded DVD. I'm assuming much here that may not be true.
