Changing a VOB file extension to mpg....doesn't work?

I've been told that by changing the file extension on a VOB to MPG will allow me to edit the file in an MPG editor. Problem is Quicktime Pro will play the MPEG and sound is in synch, but no MPEG editors will play the converted file. If I convert the original VOB in YASA VOB to MPEG Convertor this rectifies the problem, enablying me to cut the file, but there is a loss of quality even on the highest setting.
Is there a way I can edit the VOB directly rather than converting to MPEG first, ie is there some software that splits VOB without losing quality?

Good question Cooper, I wished someone would have replied to it with a response by now. Does anyone know? I, too have changed the VOB ext to MPG but the programs I am using know better. Can someone help us please?

yep me too i want to import mpeg or AVI into adobe premier.
I have used dvd decripter to copy VOB file to hard drive but dont know how to import into premier.

Not sure whether Premiere will import QT Ref files (I use AVID XPro) but there's a program just come out called Cinematize 2 which will rip a VOB (DVD Decrypter still needed for illegal stuff) and convert to QT ref file or MPEG2. Try it , it's meant to be good. (also availble for Mac)

I just don't understand in the most simplest terms on how to convert VOB to MPEG2 so I can author it for a DVD. Does anyone know?

have found that if i change the extention name from .VOB to .mpeg i can import the file into Adobe premier 6.5, then i can fully edit the mpeg, alter the audio track etc the save as AVI or to megeg as a new edited movie.

Good find Davidlee, this means the MPEG2 is loseless on file conversion, and you get audio synch?. Tell me what export options do you get with Premiere Pro? Obviously AVI (but this will create large files) do you happen to know what other file options there are?
QT Ref/QT Mov for example? Avid's a swine still doesn't support MPEG2, god knows why.

I can export from Adobe Premier as an AVI, FLC, Animated Gif, MOV, TIF and TGA sequence or just export the Audio

I have exported my file ( movie + audio) Direct to DVD in Premiere Pro, even though I select mpg, it makes it a VOB file. urgh!
I can't play it in Quicktime or anyything else? What do I do?
I want an mpg movie that can be recognized.

I would have thought that if you create a movie onto dvd by burning it out from premier it would always make a VOB. thats what its suposed to do so that you can play it on dvd players. If you wanted to put an mpeg file onto dvd just simply drag and drop it using explorer

Davidlee, I must be missing a big piece of info.
So, how do I burn the DVD as an MPEG and not have the file blow up to 2gig.
That is my other problem, when I burn it as a movie and then save it as an mpeg it is fine, other than the fact that it is HUGE, too huge for our purposes.

You could have created a VCD but you said the file was about 2gb did'nt you?
Oh well thats out.
I think a 2gb mpeg file will play very slow and jerky when played directly from the cd.
Better to make it a VOB file to play on your dvd pc

Unfortunately it will be played on a PC only and it is high quality, we do military simulations.
I have been pulling my hair out.

Have you thought about SVCD? not as good as dvd quality but better than VCD. You could span it over 2 or 3 cd-r's and it will play on a standard pc cd drive

No had never heard of that, probably could look into it in the near future but...
Is there any way I can reduce my size when creating my movie? ( like i said 2 gig)
It is only 8 minutes long with music, I just don't understand why it is blowing up like that, from 385mg movie + 85mg audio...
very frustrating and I certainly appreciate your kind help, It just has to be on a DVD that can be played on my bosses computer when he goes on sales calls.

Well yes I have done similar things myself. eg save an AVI movie from max and edit in premier to produce mpeg.
I have never used premier to actually burn to dvd though. I saved the finished mpeg movie (2.5 gig) out of premier and used a dvd authoring software to create the dvd disk (In this case Pinacle expression)
Works fine with files up to 4.3 GB

I will if I don't hang myself ( Just kidding!) This has been quite frustrating, I didn't realize it was supposed to burn with a VOB extension. And everyone on the thread was trying to import VOB INTO premiere or somewhere, while I was trying to figure out what to do with it once Premiere spit it out like that. Go figure.
I need to try to get my file size smaller too.
