the software I currently have: Nero OEM 6.x, anydvd, dvd decryptor, dvd shrink, smartripper. (is this a case of overkill?)
It's been a while since I 1st played with converting dvd's to vcd's and now, since now I have a dvd burner I have moved up to backing up my dvd's to dvd+r (ah, technology...)
My successfull method is having anydvd running in the background (as the program is "supposed to do"), using ONLY dvd shrink to make my "backup" and burn the dvd thru dvd shrink using my nero program. This method (since I do use the "deep analysis") usually takes 2 hrs. minimum or sometimes a little less depending on the dvd I am backing up. I plan 2 hrs no matter what the dvd. Is this the best I can do? I don't mind waiting because the quality is excellent, I cannot tell the difference from the original, but it would be nice to try to cut down on the process time.
What significant differences is there from this method if I was to use dvd decryptor or smartripper and rip dvd's to my HD?.
Can anyone out there tell me what I can gain by ripping instead of using my 1st method?
I just want to make this process as smooth and simple as possible without alot of confusion or alot of time (trying to cut down the amount of time needed to complete the dvd project). I have read all of the info out there, and my own conclusion is that dvd shrink with my nero program is just about all you really need to backup your dvd's. Do you really need dvd decryptor, smartripper, anydvd? I have read that you should have these as "backup programs for difficult dvd's, but how often are they used? (so far I have not encountered any difficulties with what I have backed up so far).
I thank you for your time and diligence in answering my questions in this post.
