why does movie ripped in 2 different locations have 2 different sizes?

i've been experimenting w/ decrypter and shrink lately and one thing i've noticed is this, i saved the movie dodgeball to a folder i created on my desktop for all of my movies. the size of this file is 7.54 GB and when i open the file in dvd shrink the compression is at 50.2%. i saved the movie again to my documents\my videos to see if there was a difference. the file size is 4.35 GB and when opened in shrink the compression is at 100%. if i burn it from desktop\my movies i have to edit it to get it to fit. if i burn it from my documents\my videos, apparently i can burn it w/ everything left on it. what is the difference here?
also i did the same thing w/ the movie anchorman. when i saved it to either place i got two different files, anchorman, which has a size of 7.73 GB and anchorman.MDS which has a size of 8.22 GB. but they both compress at 50.9% when opened in shrink. what is the MDS file?
