From what I am reading I can just go get a rental and back it up. Is this true? How do I go about this? I believe it will be easier then having to download what i want.

A backup is making a copy of something that you own. But, yes you can copy rental videos if you feel no guilt about stealing. There's a section here on the site that should get you started.
