For some time now, I've been using WinAVI to create DVDs from my avi and mpg files...at least until it started screwing up and freezing on a lot of them.

I then started playing around with other software and learning to make menus and such, and have received a great amount of help by searching through a lot of forums. One of my personal goals is to author a complex DVD complete with menus, submenus, subtitles, etc.

Right now, I would like some opinions for the following questions:

1) What is the best/easiest software to use to encode and author DVD-Rs?

2) Is it better to split the audio and video streams, or just leave them in tact?

3) What is a good program for creating subtitles?

4) I have run into some videos that lock up on me...any ideas about how to fix these errors?
