best player for downloaded movies?

Would be interested to hear opinions on which hardware DVD player can handle downloaded movies best. would imagine this means compability with as many codecs as poss and ability to use .srt .sub files. most of my movies are stored 4-6 on dvd-r and i would prefer not to have to do any re-encoding! at the mo i'm considering buying Philips DVP 630 (UK equivilant of DVP 642?), Pioneer DV-575a, Toshiba SD340 or AndrewBoss player (if i can find it!) have any independent benchmark type reviews of divx players been done?
