Playing DIVX/XVID on DVD player (question)

I'm about to purchase an Avayon DXP-1000 DVD player that is supposed to play DIVX and XVID movies. However, I wasn't sure how this worked so I have a couple of questions for those who know:
1) Do I just burn the DIVX/XVID files (using Nero, for example) to a blank CD/DVD in the ISO/UDF format, or is there a special type of formatting I need to use in order to get a regular DVD player that supports DIVX to read it? I'm used to making VOB's for burning in the DVD Video format, but just wasn't sure how to do it with just the movie files with these players.
2) The player says it supports DIVX and XVID *except* those with QPEL or GMC. What does that mean? How do I know if the movie files I have are using QPEL or GMC? And if they DO, I assume I can re-encode the movies without these parameters?
3) Will these DVD players automatically use the whole TV screen when playing these movies or will they display differently depending on the resolution of the movie files I burned? Do they have to be in a certain resolution or frame rate to play on these players or do they work similarly to Windows Media Player that simply adjusts to the type of movie you open?

If your player is xvid or divx compliant make note that I would only buy a divx certified dvd player because others have issues and are slower then molases in the winter time opening the video....
Check http://www.divx.com to see if your player is certified non certified players will play but at most times I find them to be buggy well at least few that I have tried..
But all you need to do is burn the files onto a CD or DVD in data format ez as cake no bs.

SO if u just burn a xvid file to dvd, it should play. how about if i had subtitles files? do i just burn the .sub files onto the dvd along with the xvid? and how do i activate them? will they be burnt into the moive?
is there a way to create menus for xvids? and i assume all .avi files are xvid or divx?
also, if i add multiple xvid files onto a dvd, how will i be able to choose whihc one i want to watch?

Yes, the Avayon player is DIVX certified. It should be arriving some time today, so I will report back. I don't think it's possible to make menus for the AVI files like you can when you make a DVD Video disc, but there is a file browser that lets you choose which movie file to play.
I already have some TV episodes burned to a DVD+RW, so I'll see how that works as soon as I get it hooked up. If this works out, it will be a MUCH better solution than converting all of them to DVD Video format - that requires 1) re-encoding the DIVX/XVID files to MPEG2 format (I have been using TMPG Enc to do that, but it still takes a couple of hours for each TV episode, 2) then I have to make and compile a DVD with DVD authoring software. And then, of course, there isn't as much room on a DVD for regular DVD Video. My 45 min TV shows are about 350MB in AVI format, but when I make the DVD, they are at least 1.5GB, so I can really only hold 2 or 3 episodes per DVD (depending on the quality I chose).
Now I'm hoping to be able to simply burn the AVI files to a DVD-R or DVD+RW and bypass the encoding steps. The downside, of course, that these discs will only be able to play on DIVX/XVID players, which are still pretty few.

Travis, i am curious to hear how your DVD+RW works out since i am considering buying a divx/xvid dvd player. (it would save me a huge amount of money on dvd discs) Good luck, hope to hear everything worked for you.

No problem! The Avayon player hasn't had a problem with any of the media I've been using. I've currently been using the following:
- Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (was on sale at Office Max)
- Verbatim DVD-R 4x
- Imation CD-R 48x
Also, the player has played almost every movie I had tried with it. The only exception was one that had QPEL and another that said "resolution not supported" - I think it was like 920 x something. But all of the 720x480 movies have played flawlessly. It also plays MPEG2 files without having to convert them to VOB's for DVD Video. And I've tried one MP3 CD and it's also very nice, though I haven't been able to find a way to shuffle all songs on the disc (only if they are in the same directory).
The only other problem I encountered was an unexplained stutter in the video of a file I encoded to both DIVX and XVID from my DV camcorder, but I'm thinking I just did something wrong.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. The player is a great bargain at $80!

just a few questions, cuz i too also wanted to got a divx, xvid dvd player. So, all you have to do is burn the divx AVI file to a data cd-r using nero(this is what i used), then put it in the dvd player, and it will play? nothing else,no encode, just a regular data burning of a divx movie?

Sure as long as the AVI doesn't use unsupported features like qpel or GMC or unsupported audio like AAC.
Should also point out that a fair few players support qpel and DivX's 1 warp point GMC. Also some support the AAC and the mp4 container. Also I think I recall reading that Pioneer have a player that supports vorbis/ogm.

Have a question about your comment regarding Xvid and QP and GMC. How do I tell if the version of Xvid I use encodes using these features? I have a number of encoded Xvid movies, but don't know if they were encoded with these features.

QUESTION
I've made about a hundred DVD-backups on DVD-R, and on many of them I've put home made labels- AVERY WHT. MAT labels- On my old Panasonic DVD player I had no problem whatso ever playing these DVD's, However my APEX 1110w and Philips DVP642 have all had problems playing these movies, also I know that the problem is not the DVD-r's since I have other, store bought, DVD's that I've made lables for that also don't play.
My question is I've recently ordered the AVAYON DX-1000 I'm wondering If anyone knows if I should expect the same problem. Also dose anyone have an Idea why I'm having a problem with the labeled discs?
