Hi rDR,

Again thanks for your help last time.

But I have a question:
I'm using GraphEdit for ripping the audio, it really good (for me then).

I want to get beter video quality on my VCD to play it on my Sony-DAVS500.

Thnx

Video quality can't be really pushed any further, TMPGEnc is probably the best MPEG-1 encoder available at the moment. Only way to improve the quality is to change to SVCD as format -- obviously you need more CDs for each movie, but if you don't think this is problem (and that your DVD player supports SVCDs), you should go for it. Regular length movie (appx. 90-110mins) takes appx. 3 CDs in SVCD format.

Viper01, ever tried DVD2MPG, for me it´s a slow process, but the best video quality for VCD.

Hi Viper......

I think dRD is probably right about TMPGEnc; after investing *gobs* of time using other mpeg-1 encoders, I have to grudgingly admit that he was right. I only say 'grudgingly' because I now am unsatisfied with the vcds I have already (painstakingly) made, and am now going through the tedious process of re-encoding them all over again. There really IS a recognizeable video difference between using say, the bbMPEG plugin, and TMP's vcd .mcf template.

If you can afford the time, *always* use the highest-quality video-encode setting (found under 'Settings') for 'motion search precision'. It makes a substancial difference. Since I am now 'spoiled rotten' <gg> I frameserve to TMP with DVD2AVI as well.

Like you, I too use GraphEdit to extract the AC3 5.1 audio to a 48kHz stereo PCM wave file. If you make a project file in DVD2AVI (recommended), don't forget to select "none" for the audio track. (Not track 1 or track 2 or...), and the .d2v project file will be created in mere minutes. By default, the GraphEdit filter supplies a wave file that is *much* more satisfying in sound level (i.e. it is "normalized" [compressed] to a level far more listenable on standard TVs and PC monitors. (I further process the audio elsewhere, but it isn't generally necessary to do that).

TMP's standard VCD template will take care of everything else from there, yielding the best-looking vcd file you're likely to get from anything else, ready for burning.

BTW, if you get a chance to look at SmartRipper's newest version, (2.41) please do so! I haven't a *clue* how the author(s) manage to improve this o-u-t-s-t-a-n-d-i-n-g software's functionality any further, but they continue to DO SO !!

Hope this helps .......

A_Klingon: Despite lack of free HDD space (ridiculous 26GB doesn't really do it nowadays, I basically now have plain W2k and rest of the HDD is for video editing :-), I've began to try out various SVCD solutions and I must admit that I'm impressed by the SVCD.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2SVCD pack so far, even more now when the author decided to add support for TMPGEnc as an encoder (even that IMHO CCE has still slightly better quality, but if I recommend the package, I don't have to listen whining about CCE being commercial and costing $1000 ;-). That's the main reason why I haven't produced an DVD->SVCD guide for the site yet.

But yeah, 2-3 years ago VCD quality seemed impressive, a year ago it was OK and now I need at least SVCD quality. I'm kinda afraid what happens when I get decent widescreen TV, I probably start waiting for Blu-Ray and sell all my DVDs ;-)

Great to hear from you again, dRD !!

HA! 26 Gigs ???? (Luxury!) - I'm still scraping by through life with 10.1 gigs. [cringe-shhhhhhh!] But you know, it's funny..... I too pretty much have my computer set up for video encoding and little else. My internet account and a few other little things are all that separates my hard disc from being one, big (small) video processor. <g>

The day I take the dvd-recorder plunge is also the day I buy at least 40 or so gigs of HDD space.

I can live with white-book vcd for now, but yes, it's just a matter of time..... If you ever do produce a svcd guide, I'll certainly pore through it, but you know? With www.cd-recordable.com selling single-sided dvd blanks for just $3.00 US each (double-sided @ $6), you have to wonder if a forthcoming dvd-to-dvd guide might be more appropriate.

The only reason I haven't been making svcds (I can whip up a truly decent Hi-Bit Divx; svcd can't be much harder) is that I don't have a standalone that will play them, nor do any svcd-compatible players exist in my city/province, nor do I really wish to buy one by mail-order (offshore/Asia), with dvd-r just around the corner.

At this point, I wouldn't worry too much about blu-laser and/or genuine Hi-Def video. No one can afford it; it's black magic; no commercial content exists, bla-bla-bla. Give it at least 5 years or so.....

With svcd you have quite a few options, bit-wise to choose from; it's not as simple as vcd. TMP is a great help here, with its templates. I really don't think making dvd-to-dvd copies should entail all that much more than making svcds, if you don't worry about things like menus, dual languages, "extras", subtitles and the like, which I have absolutely no need for anyway.

I'd be more than happy just to get a straight mpeg2-to-mpeg2 movie copy on a standard dvd recordable disc, to play back on a standard, standalone dvd player. (who wouldn't?) That's the Holy Grail of DVD backing-up, it's coming too, as sure as you're sitting there, and it's just going to drive the Hollywood Studios NUTZ! :-)

They could have avoided all of this, you know, just by being fair with retail dvd-pricing. (I won't get into that).

They may be able to force manufacturers to cripple their commercial stand-alone dvd-recording machines (they already have), but you & I and the Internet community-at-large, are far larger & more powerful than they. (I won't get into that either).

I note elsewhere that you haven't taken the dvd-r plunge yet. You will. And I too. And I'll be scrutinizing this site for a funky dvd-to-dvd tutorial as well! (So don't move out of England back to New York just yet, ok?) <gg>

Actually, that's my plan..... I'll wait until dvd-rs become both commonplace *and* affordable, and wait to see how other folks cope with making their own backup copies. (I'm such a lazy skunk). [[just kidding - I'll certainly contribute any knowledge I possibly can]]. You know? We have ALL already learned a LOT of what we're going to *need* to know, just by making our vcds, svcds, and Divxs in the first place.

Gotta run.....TMP has just completed scrunching-up the first half of "Shrek", that animated Eddie Murphy thingee....gonna burn it now (always use cd/rw's for testing) & see how the vcd turned out.

Much obliged for the rant........

Heh, only reason why I can manage to keep my hardware requirements in minimum is the fact that I don't play games, haven't played for several years now -- kinda got tired of those :-) But video editing is definately one area which almost competes with games in terms of hardware requirements -- sure, 3D card doesn't necessarily do any good for us who use their computers for using Net and editing videos :-)

And true, DVD-Rs are making SVCD, VCD and in some sense, DivX, pretty much obsolete. I guess that DivX/MPEG-4's future is in Net/3G mobile video, not in DVD backups. Studios are definately trying to stop this, but that's why we (doom9, vcdhelp, digital-digest, afterdawn) exist ;-)

Actually I'm planning to buy DVD-R as soon as I can afford to it, buy two or three decent DVD players and pile of blank DVD-Rs, just in case those morons in Hollywood make their plans true and block future DVD backups -- obviously it will take few months until hackers circumvent those stupid copy-protection schemes, but it might mean few months hard time in terms of DVD backup'ing.

And so far I'm not moving anywhere, just trying to make the site better and hope to get it profitable sometime next year so I can focus 100% working on this one instead of programming websites for sites that cover women's yeast infection treatments ;-)

Thanks for the information so far!

I'll try the new info a.s.a.p. and let you know the outcome of it.

Time is no issue for me, neighter is HDD space:
I've a couple of computers for the job.

I'm now using a Dual Pentium 1GHz with 1GB of memory and 115GB volume (RAID5) for the the processing of the DVD to VCD and DivX, I make both.

On the other boxes I read as may guides I can to get the best quality.

Thanks so far guy's!!!
