Xvid MPEG = wrong size file

I read the guide on converting Divx/Xvid to DVD-compliant MPEG format. However, when I try to use TmpgEnc to convert a movie I have, it ends up producing a file that is over two hours long. The file it makes contains the movie, as well as a long period of silence for about an hour. Basically, it makes the movie twice as long as it originally was. Do I have to do something first, like extract the audio from the Divx file? Any help would be appreciated
