First off, I am very glad that I stumbled across this site, there is a wealth of knowledge here!!! OK, to the questions: I understand how to backup my games, how will I know whether to burn it as a dvd or cd? What else is recquired to burn and play a backup of these games aside form the game, and the console? Thank you in advance for your help.

This software DVD decrypter will allow you
to backup your ps2 games
1. Take the ps2 game put it in the dvd rom or dvd burner, your choice.
2. open the dvd decryptor program then go to to tool bar and hit MODE>ISO>READ. Then choose the correct dvd drive that the game is in as the "source". Also choose where you want the files to be stored on the pc hdd. THEN CLICK DECRYPT , or the huge graphical picture at the bottom of the program which makes it run. The game is now copying to your HDD. Take the game out when finished (it might take a while).
3. Go to the same tab in dvd decryptor and choose MODE>ISO>WRITE. This will then let you look for the files you just created in step 2. Select the file that you just created. (There is only 2 files creadted so pick the .mdf) (The smaller file)Then click WRITE, make sure there is blank DVD in the drive.
As far as Cd/DVD you will know by the size
(most newer ps2 games are all dvd btw)

That procedure seems to work for most games, however, as i am trying to back up san andreas, using the default setting for decryptor seems to stop at about 80% and prompting me with a i/o error. Is it me or is it the game that require special technique to backup?
I backed up GTa:SA with no problems.
Using the same method.
Make sure the disk your coping is clean
Make sure you turn off any background applications,
Make sure you are using good media
And at a slow speed 1x.
Maybe Laser is Dirty?

Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive.
Some dvd discs, for some ungodly random reason just have a block or two that cannot be read. The read speed will plummet to 0 and it will fail. I've had this happen on about 4 or 5 perfect, new, pristine discs in the past. I think it has to do with the shape/angle of the metal layer embedded in the plastic of the disc. Often, they even seem to play perfectly too. Sometimes you can see an area of metal that looks slightly darker as if it was damp in the disc which is a telltale sign of the manufacturing defect. Anyway it's pretty rare and it only happens like .5% (that's half of one percent) of the time to me.
Just find another copy of it, or return it to the store and say it didn't play in your ps2/dvd player. The new one WILL copy flawlessly.
