i have read a lot that the lite-on 166s was one of the fastest, but then i stumbled upon this post:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=18363

and it looks as the aopen 1648 is one of the fastest? any comments on it? also i believe the 166s was without any firmware updates, so i do not know if it would be faster than than the aopen with the updates.

thanks

Actually the 166s is no longer in production. The current model(which I have) is the 167T.

well is the 167t faster than the aopen drive?

the aopen drive must be pretty popular, newegg is out of them, plus it has the 3 different bezel's

Faster is not always better as you increase the chance of read errors.

Lite On ROM firmware updates can be found here:

http://digi.rpc1.org/rpc.htm

The 167T is every bit as fast as the 166S. After two and a half years of very heavy use I wore out my 166S so I replaced it with a 167T.

These are some speed tests done with Nero CD/DVD Speed Utility.

Average: 10.81X
End: 14.03X

Lite-On 167T
