Mpeg or WMV on DVD

I have a movie in MPEG and WMV format that was split into two parts. I joined them using an MPEG joiner and Windows Movie Maker with no problem. Now I want to burn them on a DVD so I can watch it on my DVD player. I generally use Nero for my burning software, but I've tried a burning both file types on a DVD and they won't play in my DVD player. Do I have to convert the files from an MPEG or WMV to a different format? If so, can someone please help me out on what to do and the name of the software I should be using. Thanks
