Hi,
I have a SCPH-10000 PS2 from Japan (I bought it used last year while I was living abroad) and am having trouble finding a good mod. I bought this chip (http://store.unet.net/shop/showdetl.cfm?&DID=11&Product_ID=20&CATID=6), but have ran into problems installing it. I followed all the soldering instructions, and even had the work checked by multiple people, but neither US original or back up games would work. I even had the company send a 2nd chip, which still didn't work. However, the PS@ does still work for the Japanese games. I haven't been able to find any other mods, and was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I would be willing to do the swap method, if needed. Thanks in advance!

did you use the boot guide for your chip, it also appears that it only boots cdr based backups
Booting Procedure for PS 2 backups:
Install the modchip according to the instructions and the diagram.
Turn on the PS2 console.
Wait until the start-up screen appears.
Then press the OPEN button to let the tray come out.
Insert the PS2 utility disc which came with the PS2 console.
Press the OPEN button again to let the tray go back.
After waiting for a few seconds, you will see the tray come out again. Then you must remove the utility disc and replace it with your backup disc within 4 seconds.
After a while, the tray will go back into the console and the game will start running.
Booting Procedure for PS 1 backups:
Install the modchip according to the instructions and the diagram.
Turn on the PS2 console.
Wait until the start-up screen appears.
Then press the OPEN button to let the tray come out.
Insert any Japanese original game disc.
Press the OPEN button again to let the tray go back.
After waiting for around 10 seconds, you will see the tray come out again. Then you must remove the original game disc and replace it with the backup disc within 2 seconds.
After awhile, the tray will go back into the console.
A few seconds later, the tray will come out again. Then you must remove the backup disc and replace it with the original disc again within 2 seconds.
After awhile, the tray will go back into the console again.
A few seconds later, the tray will come out again. Then you must remove the original disc and replace it with your backup disc again within 2 seconds.
After a while, the tray will go back into the console again and the game will start running.
** Note: PS2 games needs to be patched.

Maybe it just works with Japanese games. Unless I missed something, it doesn't say anywhere that it can boot US games:(

I tried that procedure, but didn't have any luck. The guys at A1Chips said that it should play all US games, both original and back up. They did say that since it is such an old system their stock of chips is very old, and may be burned out.
I was hoping someone might know of another resource for playing US games on this console.

One more thing I thought I'd mention...when I tried that boot procedure mentioned above, the tray would not open automatically after I inserted the boot disc. I'm not sure if that is a sign of a defective chip or not...

if the instructions say that it should open automatically, then i bet that it is not functioning correctly. why don't you just get a direct booting modchip=) if you're gonna swap and all of that stuff you might as well get Swap Magic. It just looks inconvenient and time consuming..but hey thats just my opinion.

Well, I would like to use a direct boot chip...I was hoping that someone might be able to suggest a good one. From all the searching around I have done, the chip I purchased seemed to be the best (and only) option, so I would love to hear others. Thanks for all the responses.

I would imagine that the earlier versions would be easier to manipulate into booting copied games, so any modchip that works well with newer versions should work just as well with the older ones.
As for getting a direct booting modchip, I would suggest getting a matrix infinity or dms4 pro. not only are they direct booting, they are also able to identify any disc you put in(DVD, PS1, PS2, backup...), so there's no need to hold reset for 5 seconds, hold buttons on the controller or whatever. everything is automatic. they both disable macrovision, both enable you to watch dvds of any region, (region-free), and much more.
the dms4 pro is equipped with a 2mb flash memory(dms4 lite=128KB, matrix infinity=64KB) to store firmware upgrades and an OS for the modchip. 64KB is more than enough for firmware upgrades, and the OS has features like booting games via HDD and running media files and mp3s, features you can just download from the internet. but it would be nice to have them stored on your modchip. the OS is not made by dms4.
in my opinion, if you want the most value out of your money, go with the matrix infinity.
