music CD image?

I am trying to make an image of a music CD. I thought the easiest way to do this would to be to make an .ISO image. However, when I tried to do this using Record_Now (not the most sophisticated s/ware I know) it would not allow me to do this, but would only allow me to make a global_image (which I think is a proprietary format).

Looking at downloads on P2P sites it seems that music images are made using .cue and .bin files. Is this the only way of making music CD images or can you make an .ISO image if you the the necessary s/ware - if so, what are the relative merits of the two methods?
