Hello everyone, I'm new to this place and to the ripping deal. I'm looking to backing my movies up here very shortly but before I do so I thought I'd go ahead and get some prior knowledge before going out and buying the software and the whole nine....

I've been looking at DVD X Copy Platinum. I don't know if you guys suggest that but if you do, good. Basically what I'm asking for here is sort of like a step by step process into safely and securely ripping my DVDs without unnecessary hassles of trial and error. If you could please let me know ahead of time whether I'll be needing extra software besides DVD X Platinum, whether or not new movies aren't able to be copied any longer, etc.....any forewarnings if you will.

Two things.

Check the Guides section here at AD. All the info you need for ripping, burning, encoding, compressing and more, coupled with the forums can't be beat.

Also, there are a lot of good freeware programs here as well to get you started. Some are strictly freeware, others you can download a fully functional trial version, which if you like you can buy it later.

The two best free Programs here are DVD Decrypter, which handles the ripping process and also has it's own burn engine incorporated into it.

The other is DVD Shrink, which can also rip but is used more for compression. Which unless you have a lot of money to blow on a dual-layer burner and media, you will need to compress larger movies onto smaller discs. Both have excellent usage guides here, just click the links at the top of the page. :)

I do have a dual layer DVD burner so that's one item taken care of. Man...this is going to be harder than I anticipated... I thought it would be, get the DVD X Copy Platinum software and you're good to go. Guess not!

When DVD Xcopy still had the DeCSS algorithms, it was at the top the ripping software list. Thxs to the MPAA and their ilk it has become increasingly harder to find the decryption programs needed to backup a movie that you own. Thankfully, there is AfterDawn! :)

While the dual-layer burner is definitely a plus, I would be careful burning DL discs. They are stil quite expensive. Cheapest I've seen is $30 US for a 3-pk. Kinda hard to swallow if you happen to make a pop-can coaster out of it, ESPECIALLY since they aren't re-inscriptable yet.

Really not that hard, just gotta know where to look. :)

Don't waste your money on Xcopy it is outdated and will not do dual layer discs.It will also no longer be updated and does not do a lot of the newer movies.I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink both are free programs that work well.Nero Recode2 also is a good program for encoding/burning.DVD Decrypter I believe can do dual layer discs.

Don't be discouraged by all the work and study that goes into perfecting the burning method. Yes there is much to read and a lot of information to analyze and absorb, but it is most beneficial to acquire as much knowledge as you can before and during the learning curve. Before all is said and done, you will make some mistakes and there will be a fair amount of frustration but the end result is a learning experience that will prove to be enlightening and very constructive. And as an addendum to the previous post, yes DVDDecrypter can rip and burn dual layer discs. I've already ripped and burned two movies onto dual layer blank DVD's, Verbatim brand. I do not recommend messing around with dual layers until you have perfected your burning technique however, they are very costly at the moment.

It is going to be awhile before dual layer blank discs becomes standardized... the pricing is ludicrous and there is not sufficient consumer demand for it to become commonplace quite yet. It could take years before dual layer discs become reasonably priced but I could be wrong. Doubt it though and don't really care at the moment that much, as long as we can compress and maintain a great deal of quality, who cares to spend $10 a pop for a dual layer DVD? Ridiculous!

Shrink and DVD Decrypter will work fine for most movies now and are easy and free. With some DVD's you may have to use Decrypter first and then Shrink and then burn the ISO with Decrypter.

If you have to buy anything it may be AnyDVD to get around some of the new copy protections that are coming out.
