You are going to need to Rencode, i would forget about DVD quality as with 5 hours the bitrate is going to be way to low.

You can try SVCD but again i think the bitrate would be to low this only really leaves you with VCD but this is the worse quality of the lot.

Why not just put them on 2 discs that way you could rencode with MPEEG 2 DVD Quality and still get pretty decent quality.

You can use DVD Shrink, but make sure to use both the quality inhancement features

I have just read your first post again and you said you had 5 hours off movie on one DVD already.

If this is the case and it is on a DVD-R you dont need to rencode at all but just copy the disc.

Correct me im reading it wrong?

As for 5 hours on one disc, i guess this is a matter of opinion, i personally dont think the quality is acceptable even with quality enhancements, to much blockyness when viewed on a larger TV.

It is possible your friend is using the new double layer blank media to copy that much time on a blank dvd. Just a guess.

Wells2u,
After you have ripped the DVD to your hard drive and then opened it in Shrink and reauthored it you will hit "Back up" Once you are there hit the tab at the top that says "Quality Settings" and put a check mark in both "Perform Deep Analysis" and "Compress with high quality filters"

It will take a bit longer to reauthor your movie this way but the quality will be much better.

ww.kvcd.net
Get the KDVD template.
Use TMPGEnc with it.
16+ hours per dvdr.
