please do a little research the chip choice is up to you, start
by looking at http://www.mod-chip.com

Things to make note of when getting a chip
-wires to solder, how many
-overheating protection
-ability to disable chip
-reliable brand
-compatibilty with various ps2 versions
-various features

After you read through some sites of the chip you like, find an
installer near you and see what chips they install or buy one
elsewhere and bring it to them
good luck

there is another option, the dms4 ezi, completely solderless,
works exactly the same as the dms4 solder chip which is
probably the best chip there is.
What version is your ps2 use this:http://mod-chip.com/
index2.php?go=en/faq.htm

Dms4 ezi only works with version 4-11

Sorry, I dont own one or know anyone who owns one, they have only been out since the 15 of this month, so I dont know if people have even received their EZIs that they preordered before.

This is the minisite: http://www.dms3.com/cgi-bin/dms4ezi/site.pl?page=manual

it says manual coming soon, I dont think the chip includes a printed one, you may want to wait for the website to have the manual before you go to get one.

I have heard both bad and good comments about ordering from divineo, they are mostly good, maybe you could look around with froogle.

basically it is the chip, which you use double sided tape to put on the board(insulates from short-circuiting), then there are clips which fit over the ic chips, and an eject button harness/adaptor. It will be easier to understand when you are holding the chip in your hand.
If you wonder what it looks like, go here:
http://www.dms3.com/cgi-bin/dms4ezi/site.pl?page=pictures

there is an led panel which tells you if you have installed the chip properly.

I'm new to this site and decided just two weeks ago to "mod" my PS2. I ordered the Magic 3.1 chip and have been doing research since so I'd know how to install it.

The chip arrived and one day later, Yesterday, I'm playing backed up games! Though the soldering was chanllenging, it wasn't impossible. It does take a bit of practice to get it right, but I think anyone who's had some soldering experience should be albe to do it.

The only snag was when I tried to play my first backed up game (bad disk). I read some more on this site and found that burning games at 1x speed makes for a more "readable" disk. Works lovely now! Using DVD Decrypter for my backups and I'm ready to go!

The soldering was so much fun, I wish i knew how to sell my backup playable PS2 so I can do it again!

Good on ya!!!

I have had years of soldering experience, but I am still not ready to solder mod a ps2 (expecially not my slimline v12) because the points are very small.

yep do whatever it takes to be careful, even if it takes you days, a good tip is to put a razor blade in between the pins on your PS2's IC chip so you dont bridge the pins, do this with your soldering iron tip pointing toward the blade.
