Ok, it's time to try the TY thing. SVP (www.blankdiscshop.co.uk) seem to sell full-face white printables at £59.98 per 100 and unbranded silver thermally-printables at £49.98. Is there any difference in quality ? I don't care what they look like and I won't be printing on them - I just want the best quality for some precious archives.

Theres no difference in terms of quality. They both use the same dye. I don't print my dvds and i always buy the silver thermals, since theyre a good amount cheaper. I feel sorry for you guys in the UK though, $47.50 per 100 is what I pay.

Ricster, I buy my TY's from SVP and I usually get the "unbranded" type, they're TYG02 and packed full of TY goodness. You save a tenner too..........

Thanks Higgsbsun - that's what I ordered. Now then, what's that utility that people use to look at the quality of their burns ?

Errr, KProbe, but you need a LiteOn burner or ROM.
I get PI max about 20 with ave around 4 and PIF max 2-3 with ave around 0.4, and that's for an 8X burn on a NEC2510 (stock F/W). I usually test a couple of disks from each spindle, but it's largely academic because they're always the same (which is why we like em).

That's it - KProbe. But I don't have a Lite-On. Is there something else I can use with my old NEC1300 ? I burn with Nero.

Nah, the only other route I'm aware of is a Plextor burner with their Plextools, they do about the same as KProbe but I think they measure jitter as well.
Like I said, I've seen virtually no variation in the TYG02's I've had from SVP, so unless they take a sudden Ritek-like nosedive, or your burner is banjoed, you can buy on faith.

download dvdinfopro from the site with the same name. It is a multi tool app that can check for errors on the disk as well as blotches in the dye.

DVDInfoPro will not help you if you have an NEC drive, if the drive hardware/firmware does not report PI/PIF, jitter, etc., then that's the end of it.
DVDInfoPro works with LiteOn (of course), and some AOpen, BTC, BenQ, Cyberdrive, Nu and Philips drives, but not NEC.

My Nero (6.6.0.1), info tool just gives driver info and disk ID. If you mean the CD/DVD Speed option, this will not give you PI/PIF or jitter readings, and will not discriminate between so-so media that will just give a smooth DVD Speed curve and very good media with very low error levels.

It means the disks have a white surface that is made to be printed on by ink jet printers.

@jtfuel - I assume you mean the TY bit ? TY stands for Taiyo Yuden.
