I have recently added a 'no solder' mod chip to my v5 PS2. I use the accompanying Swap Magic boot disks and everything works as expected.
A week later, I added the same type of chip to a friends v7 PS2, installing it in the exact same manner but it is only working VERY occasionally and the console isnt working completely since.
Firstly, the chip is supposed to add new functionality to the disk tray Open/Close button whilst maintaining the current function of the button (successful on my console) whereas my friends console has lost the ability to normally open/close the tray. It can only open by holding the open button down for 2 seconds, at which point the tray automatically closes after 5 seconds anyway (the chips new functionality doing its thing).
Secondly, the PS2 has decided to stop reading disks most of the times the console starts up (inc. originals games, SwapMagic, backups, DVD movies, CDs). I removed the cover of the console and noticed that the drive rarely started spinning when a disk is inserted (using the 5 second gap when the tray is open) and also when the console is restarted, the disk still isnt read. In the PS2 Browser, the disk returns "Disk Read Error" or something similar.
I have removed the chip and put the console back in its normal state and everything works perfectly and when I put the chip back in, it goes back to the faulty behaviour.
I have taken the console apart (maybe 50 or more times) to check for loose ribbon cables and other sources of the problem.
Can anyone tell me if there is a compatibility issue with v7 consoles (even though the chip is supposed to be for v5 to v7 consoles)? If not, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
