Burning in safemode

I have been having problems burning images as some of you may well know. Now when burning normally I have "Internal Target Failure" problems which people have been saying it's due to the media I use. However when I burn a dvd in safe mode, it works fine everytime (although is takes a lot longer to burn)

Anyone know why? Am I having some sort of conflict with other software etc?
